We consider ourselves lucky to have pioneered to arrange Engineers’ Community Gathering to “Enhance Employability Skills among Unemployed Youth on a highly respectable and knowledgeable platform of Engineers, Professors, Scholars and Entrepreneurs. The PIET Administration is highly grateful to the Worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Akram Chaudhary, University of Sargodha (UOS) who graced the occasion with his kind presence as “Chief Guest” on the eve of Engineers’ Community Gathering to discuss and enhance employ-ability skills among unemployed youth on Saturday, March 28, 2015. It is also a matter of great honor for us that our Worthy Vice Chancellor enlightened the audience by sharing his invaluable experience and thought-provoking ideas with them. PIET Administration is also thankful to our honorable guest from different engineering organization, industries and Academia Including our honorable guest speakers specially Dr. Abdul Shakoor (Chairperson, PIET), Dr Jameel Ahmed (Chairman, Department of Electrical Engineering, HITEC University, Taxila), Engr. Naeem Ahmad (MD Pak American Fertilizer), Dr. Imran Cheema (Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, FAST University Lahore), Engr. Shafqat Asghar (Retd. GM WAPDA), Engr. Mubashir (Regional General Manager Technical PTCL), Engr. Nusrullah Babar (Registrar NFC-IET), Engr. Chaudhary Shaukat (Chief Executive Officer (Retd.) WAPDA), Dr. Mansoor Imam (HOD Civil Engineering, PIET) and to all engineers who took out their precious time to attend the event. The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Engr. Nisar Ahmad Shakoor (Director, PIET) welcomed all the guests and extended special gratitude to the Worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Akram Chaudhary, for accepting the invitation of being the Chief Guest for this occasion. He highlighted the purpose of the gathering and also discussed numerous ways and means to go about the issues of unemployment. During his address, the Worthy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Akram Chaudhary discussed that innovations in technology are not the legacy of the west only and highlighted the importance of research-oriented studies. He highlighted the research activity being carried out at the UOS in various fields and motivated PIETians and the audience to emulate them. He gave some extremely motivating and at the same time beneficial examples of the research projects completed at the UOS. The visionary approach of the Worthy VC drew tremendous applause from the knowledgeable gathering of experienced engineers and youth alike. After the Worthy VC’s address, questions were invited from the audience and an interesting Question/Answer session was held in which Dr Jamil Ahmad (Chairman, Dept of Electrical Enineering, HITEC University, Taxila) emphasized upon the areas of interest of the engineering accreditation bodies and gave special reference to OBE (Out-come Based Education). Engr. Naeem Ahmad (MD, Pak American Fertilizer) talked about the change in hiring criteria over the recent years and informed the audience about the importance of engineers attitude as an important criteria for induction in the industry. Dr Imran Cheema (Associate Professor, FAST University Lahore) spoke about the conceptual studies and recommended the industry to provide topics which might be useful for the students and ultimately beneficial for the industry as a whole. In response to a question regarding measures for employability skills at PIET, Engr. Omer Mushtaq (Co.ordinator Department of BSCS & BSIT, PIET) described three months Software Training Programme (PHP, HTML/CSS, MySQL & Android) free of cost at PIET for the students and also highlighted the job opportunities in software development at PIET. On this occasion, personnel’s from different organisation/industries offered internship opportunity to as many as students of PIET. The honorable speakers had consensus on a meaningful interaction between the industry and the academia. After the Question/Answer session, a Shield of Honor was presented by Dr. Abdul Shakoor (Chairman PIET) along with the dignitaries to the Worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Akram Chaudhary. Before the dinner, the scholarships were distributed among the toppers of the Institute. Towards the end of the event, Engr. Nisar Ahmad Shakoor (Director, PIET) thanked all the honorable guests who joined the occasion and had made the event memorable one. The audience in general was all praise for the arrangement of the function which highlighted and discussed the otherwise neglected problem of the unemployed engineers of the country. As such, we consider ourselves lucky to have pioneered to highlight this issue on a highly respectable and knowledgeable platform of Engineers, Professors, Scholars and Entrepreneurs.
